Cristina Garcia, Femení Sant Adrià´s player, reached this past weekend her highest scoring of the season after scoring 31 points with excellent percentages of 8/ 10 from the field, 4/7 in three pointers and 3 free throws without failure, adding 3 rebound, 3 steals, 1 assist and receiving 4 fouls for a total 32 in efficiency.
Marina Besos Pavillion received this past Saturday two of the top teams in Liga Femenina Group B, Obenasa Navarra (ranked second) and Femení Sant Adrià (fifth).
Femení Sant Adrià, coached by Ivan Torinos, arrived to this game with the imperative need of winning if they wanted to stay close to the fourth position, which allows to play playoffs to move to first división.
Obenasa Navarra who shared the lead with Uni Girona after a single defeat in fifteen games (78-87 at home to the Uni Girona) wanted to stay at the top after this weekend.
The local squad started the match strongly, especially thanks to Laura Plans and Cristina Garcia who mainly obtained early benefits through penetrations that allowed the locals to lead by up to eight points.
Obenasa knew that they would have to compensate the absence of two of their best three inside players (the British-Canadian Sarah McKay who had surgery this week and american Kate Mills) with alternative defenses through the game trying to counteract the local inside player who did have all its troops.
Obenasa Navarra is undoubtedly one of the best and deepest rosters in the competition thanks to having one of the highest budgets in the league, together with Uni Girona and also thanks to he excellent work of its technical staff.
A good second quarter of Cesar Rupérez´s players, specially thanks to Latvian Dace Cinite, allowed them to recover the difference and take the lead.
However, in the final minutes of the second quarter and although the inertia was favorable for Navarra, the visitors were not able to open a gap on the scoreboard and Femení Sant Adrià went to the locker rooms with an encouraging 30-28 on the scoreboard.
The match resumed with a good third quarter of Ivan Torino´s girls , and thanks to a high activity they got a minibreak that allowed them to partially break the game, after scoring some threes against the usual 2-3 zone of the visitors.
This time, Cinite was not enough to counterbalance the local team and it was missed the usual good contribution of one of the best point guards in the league, Portuguese Sofia Ramalho, and also the appearance of more players, because with the exception of Dace Cinite nobody was able to provide more than 7 points or 6 of efficiency.
Despite having 3 fouls with 12 minutes left, Cristina Garcia was on fire, leading the offense and scoring at will both driving to the basket and shooting from outside (4/7 three pointers) making impossible the visitor´s recovery.
So, Obenasa Navarra finally lost its first away game in the season and also the basketball average which in principle will not be significant given the advantage of 4 matches for Cesar Rupérez´s girls.
With this victory and thanks to Uni CajaCanarias´s defeat in the difficult Valls´court, Femení Sant Adrià recovers the fourth position.
Cristina García´s 31 points are the highest score of the week in any of the two Liga Femenina 2 groups and was just two point short of being the top scorer in a single game of the competition in Group B (record held by Silvia Lara, top shooting guard from Alvargómez, with 33 points).
After 17 matches, Cristina Garcia averages 14.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2,6 steals and 13.7 in efficiency in 29 minutes per game.
Cris is in the top 10 of the competition in different statistical categories: scoring (eigth), steals (fourth) and blocks (tenth), besides being the eleventh player in efficiency and the backcourt player with highest efficiency of the whole league.
